Where to begin.......complete disappointment. My mother just spent 12 days in the geripsych unit. She is back now and the only thing that has improved is her ability to walk better. She still cries constantly and paces all day long. The environment was stark and not warm at all. When we admitted her, we left them a pack of chewing gum and explained that this pacifies her greatly. We later found out this was never used though her crying continued. They took her shoes away saying they were a falling hazard. We found her on several occasions not wearing a bra. The nursing staff tried to give her medication with water though we told them upon admission that she could not swallow them with water - and the nurse's transfer notes also stated this information. The social worker was very condescending about her diagnosis and didn't even have knowledge on her type of dementia - primary progressive aphasia. She had to be educated. The social worker also made a referral to Hospice and we later found out that her diagnosis isn't even covered by medicare. What a complete waste of time and a complete trauma for my mother with dementia to be placed in a new environment without a positive outcome. When she was to be transferred back to her facility by van, we got a call from the social worker at 5 pm - wondering when we were going to pick her up! She finally arrived at her facility after 8 pm. She returned with other patient's clothes in her bag and all of her toiletries missing. After 4 calls to the facility, I still have no answer. They tell me her inventory list states that she left with everything. Well, considering the fact the I unpacked her bag I know this is not true. A staffer on night shift thinks maybe they got send home with the wrong patient. I would not recommend this place to anyone unless some big changes are made. Communication with family is NOT a strength of this facility. My biggest regret is that we put my mother through this.
DO NOT SEND YOUR LOVED ONES TO THE GERIATRIC WARD! Or take a job here. This place violates HIPAA and OSHA on a daily basis. Paitents fight and fall constantly due to lack of staff. Dr. Moloney likes to take all of "his" paitents off of their meds, and then refuses to restrain or tranquilize them, leaving them to run free. But he wouldn't know what his patients are up too because he barely visits the facility.
UT doesn't care how few staff they have, they'll just keep admitting more and more patients, including drug addicts that try to make deals in the parking lots. Why are the drug addicts I'm with the geriatrics?? This place is dangerous and needs to be shut down before someone is killed due to neglect or violence.
