I took my 5 yr old daughter in for an adenoid and tonsilectomy and I've never regretted anything more. The staff was hyper and loud and anxiety inducing. The nurse that took us in, (half ass) checked her vitals, etc.. Never even made eye contact with my daughter. There was not a shred of comforting nature in her being. The rest of the staff was the same until it was time to take her back, then this barage of loud, scary strangers shift their hurried, hyper attention into my frightened 5 yr old daughter's face and started talking to her like a puppy in a pet shop. I had researched till I was blue in the face about the actual procedure. According to every single thing I have read, the procedure takes 30 mins to an hour. My daughter has anxiety to begin with. One of the coping tools she's become very good implementing when she's scares is talking about the things that make her happy. They told me that she did quite a bit of that in the O.R. She told them about her dogs, their names, about Christmas presents she was hoping for and more... So that had to be at least 5 mins of conversation right there.. From the time they took her from me to the time they called us back to recovery, was 20 mins. So.... 15 mins to take out "extremely enlarged adenoids" and tonsils so enormous, they nearly touched when they WEREN'T infected. Immediately upon leaving surgery, they gave her an orange, sugar filled popsicle!!!! She wasn't even coherent and was missing her mouth.. That is what we found her doing when we rejoined her. She had bruises on her jaw, and her rectum was bleeding from "a suppository" (what the hell kind of suppository was it???)... and the DR. ASFAR SHARRIF'S definition of "speaking to us" afterwards, was literally quickly walking in the room and saying "she did great, she's tough"!! And walking out. Neither my husband or I were given any opportunity to say a word, or ask a single question.... We are now day 3, post op. The pain my daughter is in is literally criminal. Not her throat, but her jaw, her neck and all of her muscles from the shoulders up... from the obvious cattle call/ mass production like, bludgeoning treatment she recieved!!! She can't even open her mouth.... She wakes up sobbing from the pain.. She starts kicking her legs and crying in agony.... These are things she's never EVER done.
I am so angry with myself for not taking her and waking out. I could feel that it was not a good place, but just thought it was me being a frightened mom... I should have listened to my gut. It was like McDonald's for surgeries... A damn butcher shop!!!
I had carpel tunnel surgery on Tuesday August 31st. I found the whole staff pleasant and knowledgeable . The environment was very clean. I would definitely return if need be.
